Expert Systems

The analysis of engineering systems often involves processing uncertain information, which is obtained from imperfect sensors, incomplete databases and imprecise interpretation procedures. Data fusion is a practical approach for dealing with uncertain information because it not only uses multiple sources of information to reduce the degree of uncertainty but also propagates the remaining uncertainty through the reasoning process and hence provides a credibility measure for the results. The ACIS lab has developed and/or used a variety of data fusion architectures and soft computing techniques to analyze different applications from robotics to biomedical and environmental engineering. As an example of civil engineering applications, a fuzzy expert system has been developed to predict the remaining service life of buried pipes.
